Michael Duffy 1125028 Posted December 22, 2009 at 12:10 AM Posted December 22, 2009 at 12:10 AM Hi Guys, Does anyone know where i can find the proper procedure that i need to follow to take off, depart, approach and land in a helicopter on VATSIM? I tried checking the PRC but it seems to be only aimed at fixed wing and when i tried that tonight i ended up getting contacted by a supervisor to whom i couldn't reply as my chat box was broken. I dont think he wanted to congratulate me on my excellent flying is there any docomeents available to study so next time i go on VATSIM i know what I'm meant to do to take off and depart rather than depending on translating fixed wing instructions (which are useless when you come to approaching a helipad... Any help is appreciated. Kind Regards, M
Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted December 22, 2009 at 12:28 AM Posted December 22, 2009 at 12:28 AM all depends where you are flying. if flying around NY, there are published helicopter routes, etc.. you can use. if flying VFR you still have to stay clear of controlled airspace if not talking to ATC etc.. there arent too many differences from whats in the PRC. main things would be stuff like departing, you can depart right from the ramp instead of having to taxi to the runway, theres helicopter departure procedures aswell at some airports, and some minor phraseology differences, rest remain pretty much the same. for more info, i recommend hovercontrol. theyre site is packed with heli info if a sup contacted you, it was either you broke through someones airspace, or to tell you to squawk normal, still required to do so. i highly recommend you get your text issue straightened out before the next flight tho, required to work
Mark Richards Posted December 22, 2009 at 10:31 AM Posted December 22, 2009 at 10:31 AM Michael You might also like to look at an article I wrote for VATNZ about a year ago: Flying a Helicopter in Flight Sim - http://www.vatnz.net/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=209&Itemid=44 Hope that offers you some help as well. Michael Duffy 1125028 Posted December 22, 2009 at 10:49 PM Author Posted December 22, 2009 at 10:49 PM Thanks for the excellent replies guys. I will be scouting up on a few docs and charts before heading back on. Do any of you know the radio procedures for a helicopter to take off and land? For example, would I contact GND for anything when i am on the Helipad / want to depart from the apron? When i was on yesterday i contacted tower (skipped GND as i didn't think / know if it was necessary to contact them since i didn't need to Taxi). Tower then told me to get my take off clearance from Gnd so i did then a Super tried to contact me mid flight but I couldn't answer back as my chat box was broken in FSInn (got it fixed now I have scouted about a fair bit for Heli ATC procedures but can't find much. An Example ATC conversation from cold engine start to land & shutdown would be perfect. Any of you know of such things? Thanks again for your help, M
Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted December 22, 2009 at 11:46 PM Posted December 22, 2009 at 11:46 PM ground will never issue you departure clearance, that only comes from tower or whoever is handling tower services. what you may have understood as takeoff clearance may have been something totally different
Michael Duffy 1125028 Posted December 22, 2009 at 11:51 PM Author Posted December 22, 2009 at 11:51 PM Yeah, i thought it seemed a bit strange but I didn't feel like questioning the controller as i wasn't too comfortable with how i was meant to request take off from a helipad. Maybe they meant request some other type of clearance from GND? but if i was on the helipad ready for take off what services would i need from ground / what would i have to request / say? Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted December 22, 2009 at 11:57 PM Posted December 22, 2009 at 11:57 PM they probably wanted you to call for a VFR clearance, altho keep in mind there are a lot of controllers who dont know how to handle heli traffic anyway, depending on where you fly. only places i know that can handle heli's just fine are places that receive regular heli traffic. the NY guys are pretty good when it comes to VFR and helicopter traffic, all depends if theyve been trained to handle that yet
Dmetrey Taborko 1079623 Posted January 7, 2010 at 10:59 PM Posted January 7, 2010 at 10:59 PM If you are having problems controlling your helicopter i would suggest you to downlaod the "FS9 VTOL Control gauge for Helicopters" link- http://www.simviation.com/fsgauges_8.htm . Thats what i use/used when i wanted to practice helicopter Operations. Theres no way i could have done it with out it, you can even hower with it!!!
