Wow, didn't know my voice was so popular...lol. Anyways, like most controllers I don't have a very set schedule, but I will tell you this, my days off are Wed and Thurs. Typically, Friday I start at 3 pm, Sat at 1 pm, Sun 8 am, Mon 7 am, and Tue 6 am. This does change quite often, but those are the gerneral numbers.

However, if you'd like to find out what my voice sounds like, you can go to the liveatc.net archives. Select Monday, May 10th 1900 - 1930 Z, KLAS Tower. I start in at LC1 (25's) at about 8 minutes in. You can continue listening until about 2008 Z when I get relieved.

If you're on duty this monday evening - make sure you give WJA 1400 priority clearance. I hear that some blowhard from ZLA who thinks he is special might be on board

Speaking of you, BZ, I'm going to shamelessly quote something you mentioned in the ZLA forums regarding the taxi procedures. I hope you're right on what you were told, as that will make things a bit easier with the transition:

Gents please don't be alarmed, from what I understand and how it was explained to me, you can still say "taxi to" as long as you don't have to cross any runways.

This indicates to me that both bits of phraseology will be used, meaning that "taxi to" will still be used as long as the route to the [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned runway doesn't cross any other runways (whether active or inactive).

This helps most airports where the runways don't intersect, but places like ORD, SFO, JFK, BOS, etc. are going to have some fun.

I received a "taxi to" today with a crossing instruction...they're practicing apparently .

Not practicing yet, if they were, you would have heard "Runway ## taxi via ##, cross runway ##."

A Vatsimism yes, but when i'm the only one on center i use

N12345 Runway 17 taxi via Alpha, Mike, Whisky, Cross Runway 22, Cross runway 12R

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Perhaps this will convince our S1s that you actually DO get to do stuff on Ground and it's not just a stepping stone to a "real" rating

The thing is that unless there is an event going on, ground control serves no purpose except to inconvenience. Of course, in an event, ground is critically important.

Darrol,

The following are the functions of ground control at all times:

1.) Prevent two aircraft from colliding on a taxiway.

2.) Organize aircraft by weight cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] for the purpose of minimizing delays at the departure runway (read: wake turbulence considerations). This is also known as expediting the flow of traffic.

3.) Coordinating with tower for intersection departures if requested.

4.) Relieving the tower of responsibility for taxiways. With this, ensuring no aircraft will cross a runway without proper coordination.

Explain to me how any of these functions are inconveniencing the pilot community, the ATC community, or otherwise the National Airspace System. And please explain how you believe a "critically important" role has only one purpose, and that is to inconvenience, because clearly that is not possible if a position is "critically important."

We are trying to foster a community that embraces new students, whether they are pilots in a VA or by themselves, learning the VATSIM ropes, or at the scopes, learning the basics of the responsibilities of an S1 student. Your comment, and several others in this forum, demonstrate that you have a significant disconnect with the goal of this network and those who seek to enjoy it. Whether or not you actually do, I'm not sure. But you need to think about what you say before you say it.

I was an S1 too. I probably shouldn't have made that comment.

Although, most of those functions aren't needed with only one or two aircraft, and most S1s are lucky if they get one.

Let's just forgot I said anything.

your instructors might want to get with you to explain the functions of clearance and ground a bit more in detail. they may have shown you the basic functions enough to get by on vatsim, but doesnt sound like theyve gone into much detail.

itll all come with more experience and training, hopefully. otherwise why connect at all except for events?

Tower's fun, ground I honestly don't find enjoyable unless there is an overwhelming amount of traffic. I understand the function of ground and clearance, both of which are very critical when faced with a great deal of traffic.
