My first flight was relatively easy in comparison. I decided to go to KPHL. The ground controller let me use my FS to reposition instead of taxi (which is great, because taxiing is still a bit haphazard for me in the lighter aircraft, I have no problems taxiing the really big jets) and from there it was simple.

My second flight was a bit longer (an hour or so) from KEWR to KPHL. Again, I was permitted to use FS to reposition, and I made it out pretty easily. The real trouble came when I attempted to arrive at KPHL. I got the rw 26 approach, and I didn't know the ILS and GPS deviated from the runway. So I ended up a fair distance from the runway and declared a missed approach. Thankfully the tower controller had nobody else to worry about and could help me out, and I ended up picking 27R instead, which worked much better .

The nerves are pretty much gone now, I'm realising how great the other people on the network are and all

I love this thread and keep checking back but nobody's posting any new "first" stories

This thread has been going quite a while - I may have posted this before.

Many of my first flights were short hauls from Toronto to Buffalo without ATC because I was too worried about interacting with ATC. (Being online on unicomm gave me some confidence that I could handle ATC - it was different than flying offline somehow.)

So I was on 5 mi final in Buffalo when I saw someone come online and immediately head for the saem runway. I don't remember if I had stated my intention on unicomm, but I was so nervous about even BEING online that I decided to land and turn my cessna off the runway before I even got the the hold-short location (I thought I could do that with a cessna and I was too afraid to take my hands of the stick in order to type my intentions).

I ended up cutting directly in front of this guy holding short and turning into the taxiway right beside him. What I got on unicomm was a "WTH!?!" as I squirted by under his nose! He was quickly bemused by my apology.

No one got hurt in the episode.

Well, I had another "first-time" experience today - I tried for the first time using my mic and actually TALKING to ATC. Thankfully the airport was empty so the controller had enough time to correct my mistakes (it's much different to text!) and I made it out without difficulty. It certainly leaves text for dead, I can actually receive and acknowledge instructions while taxiing without swerving all over it

I've been off for a while due to comp probs - plucking up the courage to get back into it again. But based on my first start, it'll be ok. Thinking of sticking 'Newbie' in the comments box again though.

I've been away for a long time for many reasons.

Time to get back into it. Is there any big difference between FSINN and SB3 or is it just a matter of personal choice? I use FS9 on XP.

Thanks in advance for any advice

If you're using FSX, you'll require FSInn. Otherwise, the choice is yours. I use SB3. After trying SFInn, and enjoying it and it worked well and provided better control and flexibility. But I also found it caused little glitches on my computer (like a permanent "Gear disagree" caution on my FMC and some other possible little things that didn't happen before using it), so I'm sticking with SB3. Simple but sweet. Your mileage may vary.

My first time after dozens of hours flying plain ol vanilla FSX.

Whoa! I thought that I had it down enough to limp along lol

I guess that I am not too old, because I am still learning

First time I heard of "Ventura", now I know that it is a flight pattern after takeoff.

I now know that I can request that ATC commands from the tower from a clearance request can be typed for me (yes I iz an idiot)

Taxiing is a bitch if you do not know the airport

I suck at multitasking (talking and taxiing)

and someone just told me that I could have asked for a progressive taxi

Never really got nervous. The communications protocol is similar to the US military (Navy) protocols, so it is almost second nature to me anyway.

so Ill try again another day

I have been in the process of "first flight" for a month with a series of flights as I re-learned how to fly with FS, getting used to voice phraseology (I flew on VATSIM and SATCO before voice was the norm), etc. I think the thing that gives me the worst jitters would be communicating by voice since I'm not a very good speaker and not very good at understanding people unless they speak slowly (especially over the lower quality audio of VATSIM voice). With text its easier to know what was said and to reference it later since you just scroll up to see your heading, squawk code, etc.

Also the rating of the controller can give me some bad jitters since an S-1 can't do too much to ya but a SUP could potentially ban you if they're done with being patient with you. Not that this has ever happen to me or come close but everyone has read or hear some horror story of being suspended or threatened with suspension over the most basic of misunderstandings.

I like doing a given flight at two levels of practice, the first is strictly off-line and the second is picking a time where atc is unlikely to be online but I still might have to deal with traffic so I'll do position reports and such on UNICOM.

After a few weeks of small prop flights and the great pilot cert program at ZLA ARTCC I have gotten over some of my jitters.

Sup's don't control with a SUP ID.

Sup's also won't ban you because they've become impatient. What sup's ban for is people breaking rules or refusing to follow their instructions.

Don't believe everything you hear.

Exactly. As long as you're obviously trying to follow instructions and have tried to prepare for the task you're doing, they'll always be patient. Oh yeah, and as long as they don't have 15 other aircraft waiting for their services. If you don't know your stuff, then it's best not to go to a busy airport where there's pressure to keep everyone moving.

I have run into a Sup controlling with SUP rating on occasion, I know the chances of a Sup banning me for something stupid are very unlikely but I also close my closet door at night ya know..

I joined VATSIM in 2005. I had heard about VATSIM before... But the notion sounded too good to be true. And for some reason thought I had mis-heard... Until i paid vatsim.net a visit. After my initial excitement, I created my accound breifly flicked through the PRC before dismissing it. Downloaded Squawk box. I was sooo excited at the thought of being able to fly like a real pilot.

After starting FS2004, getting SB3 going, before i knew it I was sitting on the tarmac ready to make my first IFR flight. Now bear in mind my only experience on the simulator didn't extend beyond the relms of microsofts FS2000,2002,2004.... I had no idea what SID's & STARs were.... Or that they even existed. So i submitted a route that flight simulator found for me. And tuned the radio to Gatwick ground....... ....... I heard the sound of sheer professionalism. After about 20 minutes of listening to radio chatter... I plucked up the courage to say "8211 requesting taxi clearance to the active".... I had no idea what the active runway was at the time. The towers response was "8211, have you filed a flight plan?"... "Erm, yes" was my response. He asked me to stand by for clearance before telling me it was no good and made a number of changes. After asking him to repeat my clearance for about the fourth time I managed to correctly read it back.... Not that I had any idea what I was saying at the time.

After getting myself lost on the taxi way....Twice. I managed to make it to the runway and was cleared for take-off... .I was so sweaty and nervous! I had no idea I could be so overwhelmed with anxiety. I had no real Idea on what I was doing or how I was going to do it. I just went full thrust down the runway. When I was airborne I engaged the autopilot which was set to follow the default GPS route in which I wasn't cleared for. EGKK approach insturcted me to direct to LAM... Although I had no idea how to acheive that I just readback the instruction and proceeded on my original course. Although the ATC eventually started vectoring me... I could understand headings easily enough. By which time I could hear the frustration in his voice as he had an aircraft 50nm off course making its own route to Edinburgh.

After that little debacle I made my way to my destination... .Little else happened during the flight... I began me descent, again being vectored by Scottish center who was re-sending me instructions in text to make sure that I was able to follow them. I finally turned for the ILS runway 24... I flicked the autopilot onto approach and the autopilot lined the aircraft up for arrival... 2 minutes later it went heywire threw my plane into a nose-dive crashing into sighthill.... I immediatly turned off FS9 & SB3 in total embarr[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ment....

I never went back for weeks. But when I did go back I took a more ground up approach. This time, I actually read the PRC, learned ATC phraseology and began with listening to the traffic... while I did VFR circuits around Stanstead (moderatly busy at the time). 3 Years down the line and I feel as confident and professional and all of the other aviators on VATSIM. I have learned soooo much about aviation and flying in general thanks to this simulator and all of the aftermarket products that are available. I love the realism VATSIM offers and I will never tire of it! It really adds to your flying experience!...

As my first post here, I'll share my first experience with VATSIM (and online air traffic control in general) that happened just last weekend during the Eastern Winds 2008 event. First of all a huge thank you to the controllers at Medan and Changi Singapore who put up with my newbness

After a few days sitting on the ground in my default FSX 737 listening to ATC chatter, A broadcast for the event went out and I scrolled to SE Asia in FSCommander to see if there was much traffic. I spotted a couple planes taxiing for takeoff at Medan, and decided to put myself on the apron there to follow their handoffs. After hearing them get handed off to Jakarta Center I was feeling pretty confident and decided to just bite the bullet and try a quick flight to singapore. I checked the METAR for Changi, predicted that I would be landing on RWY 20L, 20R or 20C and selected the LELIB2B STAR within FSCommander (that's right, I had no charts yet). With my flight plan + STAR loaded into FSX and filed with FSInn my heart rate jumped as I hovered over push-to-talk.

"Tower this is Qantas four zero niner requesting IFR to Singapore as filed"

Oh no.. what have I done... now I am committed to making a fool of myself. And that's exactly what I did next. The tower accepted my request and told me to contact when ready for pushback & start.

"Um..... qantas four zero niner ready for pushback"

Pushback is quickly approved, and I start taxiing to the active runway.

"Qantas four zero niner where are you going?"

"The runway......... Qantas four zero niner"

"Negative you'll need a taxi clearance for that"

DOH! I havent even left the ground and I've already stuffed it up. Oh well, too late now. I request taxi clearance and a few minutes later I am screaming down the runway at 160 KIAS. In the air I am finally in my element, tracking my filed course and following ATC instructions with no problems.. until I get to Singapore.

"Qantas four zero niner, expect ILS RWY 20C LELIB2B approach"

GREAT! I predicted the correct STAR for my approach (or the ATC was kind enough to [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ign the one in my flight plan), so it's all ready to go in my GPS and I can fly it hands-off. My first flight could well be a success!

"Cancel that Qantas four zero niner, can you fly direct NYLON?"

wait... what? what's a NYLON?!.. after 30 seconds frantically googling and trying to find something called "NYLON" in fscommander the ATC asks if I received his last transmission. I swallow my pride, announce that I am unfamiliar with that approach and the controller asks me to continue on LELIB2B. Embarr[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ed, heart pumping and feeling the same level of newbness I experienced when first opening MSFS back in 2003, I manage to land the plane safely and exit the runway just in time for a 747 to come in behind me.

Now of course I have learnt since then that charts are pretty much a necessity when flying VATSIM, and that all I had to do was hit "direct to" in my GPS and enter NYLON, so if any new members are reading this.. TAKE NOTE

OK, first of all a confession, in order to set the scene if you will.....

As my sig sort of gives away, I spend most (OK, all!) of my flying time in the "Big Iron". I can, reasonably well, hand fly a heavy up to and down from the FL's, can read and understand instrument charts such as SID's and STAR's etc and prefer to fly them using the raw data and operating the navigation radios myself where practical to do so. I use checklists for all my aircraft, know the emergency drills reasonably well for most of the Boeing fleet and all in all consider myself to be reasonably competent at IFR flying. Heathrow, JFK and other major airports hold no fear for me anymore - that's not to say I don't make mistakes or think that I am better than anybody, the point is that I am confident and relaxed about IFR flight in heavy jets.

However, the one thing I never, ever learned to do was VFR flying.

So, I found myself this evening sitting at EGFF (Cardiff) having brought a BA 747-400 from Heathrow to the Heavy Maintenance Facility at Cardiff airport, and thinking I would like to try something a little different, loaded up my trusty PA28 with the intention of flying (IFR) to my hometown, Edinburgh.

All of a sudden I realise that there is ATC at Cardiff, and a quick check tells me it's Wycliffe Barrett, a controller whom I have seen time and time again on these forums giving help and constructive advice to newbie pilots. So I figure, what the hell - why not give this VFR malarkey a try.

To cut a long story short, Wycliffe lived up to the rather good reputation he has amongst UK pilots I've spoken to and within a short time I was ready to take off and bash the circuit at Cardiff. About the time the engine fired up was about the time my palms started to sweat and my hand began to shake. Not only was I about to do my first VFR flight online, I was about to do it with another GA aircraft in the pattern, and a big jet sitting at the gate! So it wouldn't just be Wycliffe who would see how terrible I was at this arcane dark art called VFR.....

After a few fluffed communications, due mostly to my lack of knowledge about how VFR traffic talks to and interacts with ATC I get off the ground flying right hand circuits. With a few nicely timed PM's from our friendly neighbourhood ATC I even start getting the phraesology right!

So there I am, doing low-approach-and-go-arounds at Cardiff, the other GA chappie is behind me in the circuit somewhere and a big jet is departing - and I am having the best fun I have had on Vatsim in as long as I can remember. This, I think to myself, is real flying!

And then it happened....

The steady thrum of the engine became a *cough* *cough* *cough* then silence......

It took me about a split second to realise that I had landed a 747 with maybe 5 or 6% fuel in the tanks and changed into the PA28. My nerves started to build from the second I decided to try this new form of flying, so much so that in my flustered state I - yeah you probably already figured this bit out - forgot to reset the fuel. 6% is still a fair few truckloads of fuel in a 747, but it's about enough to fill your zippo in a PA28. Actually it's exactly enough to complete 2.7 circuits at Cardiff airport. But you get the point.

One swift disconnect before I hit the wet stuff later and it's off for a smoke to calm my nerves again.

The moral of the story, and the reason I share my embarrasment, is that no matter how good you think you are, and no matter how experienced you are there is ALWAYS scope to screw up royally. And I bet a week's pay that I am by far not the only pilot with 4-figure hours logged on the network who has made a complete and utter hash of something very publicly.

So, to the newbie with first time jitters - relax and have fun. Learn from your mistakes and jump right back in. I for one, shall definitely be doing more VFR flying in future although from now on I will always make sure to check the tanks are sufficiently full before setting off!

Cheers,

Scott

P.S. - Thanks again Wycliffe, I shall most certainly be visiting Cardiff again

Big cheers for Thomas Parker for starting this thread. I regret I hadn't read it earlier - I would spent some more time in-flight. And big thanks for all controllers being friendly any time when I was connected and introduced myself as a newbie listening for traffic - if not that friendliness I would probably still been sticking into ground or flying offline You can count me as another one bit by the bug.

And about my first flight - I would be smooth and eventles if not two coincidences:

- I started descending to early

- due to above I was over half an hour to my destination, 10 thousand feet bellow my planed FL, at this moment EPWW_CTR appeared asking me why I am flying not at filed FL - and I almost lost my tongue from nerves

Best regards and see you on-line!

Artur

First of all, excellent thread! Made me a lot less nervous about my first time on VATSIM. Onto my story;

I'm practically a complete newbie when it comes to flight simulator having returned after a 7 year break (A lot has changed since FS2000). I felt confident I could get clearance from ATC, Taxi, take off and get near my destination but from then on I had no idea what STARs were or how to tune into the LOC and get to the approach. I signed up a few days ago to Couger Virtual, VA, and tonight the training officer took me on a tutorial flight. He taught me how to create a route, put it into a flight plan, file the flight plan, program my FMC and how to talk to ATC.

Crunch time comes, we both contact the ATC at EGCC to get our taxi clearance to runway 23L. He was in the air before I began my pushback which made me nervous. I got to the hold position when ATC goes offline without warning. I decide to announce what I'm doing over Unicom and take off, letting A/P do the work for me.

Around halfway through the flight I get bored and start playing around with the FMC, remembering something my training officer said earlier I pressed 'Erase' thinking it would take me back a page. I then found myself thinking, 'Hey, where did my flight plan go?'. I was now flying blind toward Bristol EGGD. I panicked, disconnected and tried again from Manchester. Took off with no ATC and got to around the same point again when I got bored once more and started fiddling with the autopilot, once again the flight plan disappears and I curse and try again. The 3rd time I take off from EGCC with no ATC, start getting near EGGD when I announce what I'm doing over Unicom the ATC from EGGD informs me he's online and to contact him.

Next follows and akward text conversation with me requesting runway 09 and him trying to tell me it's not being used and I needed to go around for 27. By the time I understood the message I was near the approach for 09 and flew downwind of the airport to get the LOC for 27. I flew a shaky landing on 27, not bad considering the low visibility and crosswind, parked up and heaved a huge sigh of relief. I'd like to say sorry to the ATC at EGCC tonight, I promise not to be so dense in the future.

Now I'm hooked on VATSIM. Going to get some more training using STARs and I'll fly a lot more online

I have entertained flying on VATSIM for ever 2 years, I finally did it and I'm glad I did, the controllers I have dealt with are pretty forgiving and will politely correct you and it over all is a great environment to fly in, it is the closest thing to real flying you can do on a computer.

Great thread! I just (ehm sort of) completed my first VATSIM flight. Heathrow to Munchen and it was great. The weather clear, the sun setting, and me crashing during landing on the runway! . I was just above (5 feet?) the runway and suddenly I heard a crashing noise and my lower fuselage was on fire, gear destroyed and my A300 sliding to the runway. I remember one day on FS9 single player when I managed to put down a 737 in Munich again with extremely low visibility and snow (icy brrrr). I landed it perfectly that day. I also remembered the A300 as very easy to land but not on VATSIM maybe! . Anyway I remained silent after my crash, and after a while, FS9 threw me back to my last save point (FL300 in Frankfurt) and I disconnected hands still shaking. After gazing a little to the screen I laughed a little and realized that this is part of the fun. Too bad I didnt say to the Munich control tower to bring a cleaning lady to clean up the mess on the runway .

Dont be afraid of mistakes! I am sure you wont take to hell hundreds of people just like I did today! Flight BAW050 sure was a trip to the devil..

Well, just had my first set of flights this evening with manned centers and airports and I definitely have the bug even though certain points I became a bit nervous with.

Started out after flying last night in unmanned airspace from KCLE to KORD and finally to KDEN. Began this evening from KDEN (unmanned) to KORD. I already knew at the time both Minneapolis and Chicago centers were online and I'd fly right through both. Come into Minn. and get a contact me. Promptly tune over read off my callsign and flight level. Had to have a few repeats, but got my squawk code and kept going till handoff to Chicago center. Lots of SOP later I begin my approach to O'Hare which went fairly well up till fs9 miraculously crashed upon touchdown which really made a mess there.

Later on I file a plan from KORD to KCLE to finish off the night. Lots of fighting with FSinn later (FSinn/FWinn on the sidekick machine kept hogging cpu cycles and locking up the machine. Googled it and it's apparently a problem with FSinn 1.3 so I downgraded to 1.2) and about 15 minutes late of my scheduled departure, I'm cleared from O'hare. Had some problems with choppy voice initially out of O'hare, but made it out fairly smoothly to Cleveland. And upon approach to KCLE, even though my FMC completely [Mod - lovely stuff]ped out on me and I had to fly by hand, Cle_CTR directed me easily into the approach till I got a visual and followed the glideslope as an affirmation.

I'm still getting used to the mannerisms in voice, but I'm quickly picking it up. I flew as CHA1402 tonight if anyone spotted me out there.

Hopefully I can get my charts and procedures for KOAK, KSNA, and KSAN and join in on tomorrow's fly-in out that way.

~See you all in the skies.

EDIT: Also major props to Chicago center and ORD controllers for some great flights. Keep up the good work.

I have been planning to fly on VATSIM for the last 3 yrs ever since I heard about it and only managed to do so last Sat Oct 3 '08. Never will I forget that day. I had done OBS for 1 and a 1/2 hrs, flown lots of visuals in my 8 yrs with FS, but first time online was something else. I just flew a complete Fly-by-wire (and they mean it) to the tee. It was from YSSY to YMML and to my surprise at 11pm on a Sat Night (US pac time) I flew in completely controlled air space. The controllers were extremely helpful and ML app controller had already gotten in touch with me b4 i took off (ty ML_APP Arjun Murthy) and then I flew the SID as instructed, FBW of course. The plane was flying steadily, but I was another story. I was shaking so much that I did not realize that 1 hr after i had landed shut down and shut down the computer that I was still shaking and my heart was racing as if I was going to make an emergency landing .

It was a short hop and just as i was relaxing i found out that the my FMS did not have the STAR. APP was kind enuf to vctr me in thru and I tuned into the ILS, the TWR and landed fine (did i tell u i was flying with 'ignore crashes'...well i was). I have said and repeated ATC instructions for 4 yrs (since FS2004) in the room to my self when I am flying, but saying it to online controllers was like I was learning to speak. There is a note some where in the PRC or reading section which says make sure BRAIN and MOUTH are connected, that sure wasn't me . Worst, my engine noise was so high I cud hardly hear some controllers.

But after all that, it was the most fantastic experience in my life . Tks to the twr and e/r controllers. I have been wanting to get my RW pilot lic which still hasn't happened, but this is absolutely great. I have read and read about it, still flying doesn't compare to all the reading you can do. I've flown every night since that day (only 3 days so far), including today's vis to 33L in kBOS and it was absolutely fanta-bulous. I have no idea what VATSIM's slogan or caption is but if I don't upset the MS guys, this is ..AS REAL AS IT GETS...

Charan, what a very nice post thanks for sharing your experience. I'm used to Long Haul flights now and everything is going easy for me, and also I have a story to share regarding my past experience as your so called "First Time Jitter". Well here it goes..

It started of when I was searching around the net regarding flight simulator, all it's features and all the add ons I can get. I was a fan of military jets such as the B2B, and F16. But then after several years I got all bored with default ATC as if I'm looking for a big enhancement. I know nothing with the PSS, Wilco, Overland and even PMDG. All I know was the default aircrafts. I have come searching for some youtube videos regarding flight simulation, and I found alot of videos most of them were videos of 777 and 747 landing in Kai Tak..and then here I found the video of Flight Simulator X, it was a very great video, also I found this video where a guy in front of his laptop and inside a coffee shop saying "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday this is World Travel 731, we have birth coming in fast, I need to put this baby on the ground..." I was surprised when I saw an old lady in front of his desktop and replied to World travel 731 "World Travel 731, Frankfurt tower, you are cleared to land runway 23R" Come on guys, we all know this video!

Then I was surprised from what I saw from that video as if it made me search on what the heck is going on there? And then voila, I found VATSIM, at first I thought this thing will automatically launch my FS and I was twisting "How in the world can I get this VATSIM thingy working?!" Through curiousity, I've read the PRC the whole week and decided to download the Squawkbox. Here comes another freaking question, "How can I get this SB3 working". I am connected but I don't see anyone. Unexpectedly, I saw SFO_TWR online and ask him, how do I communicate with them and he keeps telling me "Contact bla bla bla on the main frequency" I was thinking what the hell is that Main frequency. Again, I'm stuck into this problem "Ignorance". (PS: I wasn't in KSFO that time, I was in another airfield.)

The next day, I decided to go online in our local airport (RPLL) and we have RPLL_TWR online, and from there starts my virtual career (it was like 3 weeks before I learned how a VA works).

Now I will ask you a question under this situation, you haven't taste VATSIM yet and yet you can fly long-haul flight (offline) let's say KJFK-EGLL, can you fly this route offline once you've tasted VATSIM already? For me I really really can't. But this is me, can you?

I just wanted to say that VATSIM is worth trying for and thanks for all it's developer! But now, I'm also one of those who contribute something (little things) in our community like helping to develop new FIRs.

All the best!
