Chris Renne 818571 Posted October 28, 2005 at 12:55 AM Posted October 28, 2005 at 12:55 AM Hey Folks, A groundbreaking announcement - well at least I think so, but maybe I'm biased - VATUSA is preliminarily going to staff up every night of the week in a certain region or ARTCC. This means that every night, starting at 0000Z and going until the controllers fall asleep, somewhere in VATUSA is guaranteed to be staffed. This layout will be run on a trial basis for the next few weeks based on input from pilots and controllers alike but the response so far from ARTCCs has been pretty encouraging so here goes. Schedule is as follows (and posted on the calendar): SATURDAY - HONOLULU SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY - ANCHORAGE SPOTLIGHT MONDAY - EASTERN REGIONALS TUESDAY - SOUTHERN REGIONALS WEDNESDAY - CENTRAL REGIONALS THURSDAY - WESTERN REGIONALS FRIDAY - VATUSA "FRIDAY NIGHT FRENZY" where ALL of VATUSA's ARTCCs are encouraged to staff up All times for each night are preliminarily 0000Z for simplicity's sake. This means a little early for some West Coast folks and maybe a little late for some East Colks folks but overall I think it, at least for now, works out better than having a time gradient across different regions' nights. Heck even that sentence confused me. Anyway, we'll give this a spin; always welcome to feedback, hopefully most pilots and controllers will like the idea! Nicholas Bartolotta 912967 Posted October 28, 2005 at 12:58 AM Posted October 28, 2005 at 12:58 AM Sounds very cool!! Can you give a little run-down on what each "regional" includes (as in ARTCC's)? Chris Renne 818571 Posted October 28, 2005 at 01:03 AM Author Posted October 28, 2005 at 01:03 AM Sure. Obviously HNL and ANC's nights are self-explanatory, as is the Friday Night Frenzy. Eastern (also referred to as Northeastern): BOSTON, CLEVELAND, INDIANAPOLIS, NEW YORK, D.C. Southern: ATLANTA, FORT WORTH, HOUSTON, JACKSONVILLE, MEMPHIS, MIAMI Central: ALBUQUERQUE, CHICAGO, DENVER, KANSAS CITY, MINNEAPOLIS Western: LOS ANGELES, OAKLAND, SALT LAKE CITY, SEATTLE Hope this helps! Probably should have figured that out when Mark got promoted to VATUSA9. Good job on setting this up Chris. Should be a fun time for all.
Chris Renne 818571 Posted October 28, 2005 at 09:31 PM Author Posted October 28, 2005 at 09:31 PM Heh yeah Fred I definitely rememnber being in the midst of them a year or so ago - what I think is new, however, about this program is the fact that every night of the week there will be somewhere in VATUSA that is guaranteed to be staffed; on non-regional nights, pilots will find HNL (Saturdays), Anchorage (Sundays) or anywhere in VATUSA (Friday Night Frenzy) staffed which I think is pretty....sweet. We shall see! Christian Renne Events Director/VA Liaison VATUSA (5) [email protected]

Kevin Noe 895858 Posted November 3, 2005 at 01:59 AM Posted November 3, 2005 at 01:59 AM Jeff, I have an idea for this event. Since i know everyone cant make there night and some nights are a lot more dull than others it might be a good idea to rotate the days. Keep friday how it is and have each week you move up a day. or every other week.. So tonight is central staff up night but next week we would have thursdays and keep it going like that. This way we can have controllers that cant make it this week maybe make it next. This also give each region a chance to work weekends or busy night at least once a month. I just think its a little more fair than just saying here is your night and hope you get traffic. The only hard part i can see from this is when to make the switch of day. but i am sure someone can come up with an idea on how to do it. Chris Renne 818571 Posted November 3, 2005 at 02:38 AM Author Posted November 3, 2005 at 02:38 AM Very interesting idea, Kevin. I guess whether or not we did something like this would come down to weighing its pros and the cons. Is the benefit of rotating the nights equal to or greater than the possible confusion or traffic incconsistencies it might cause for pilots? Something to consider. If you guys think rotating nights like this is the best course of action, let me know and maybe we can post a formal poll or something. Feedback appreciated!
