Hi I am brand new in Vatsim, but I have some GA background and flew my first few hours today successfully. To brush up on my rusty skills I tried enrolling into the P1 program at Vatstar but the times they offered were at 0200 and 2200UTC way too early or too late for me (UTC+2) and I simply can’t commit to a certain course time.  I thought there was self study courses available independent of time?  Can anyone recommend sth? Or put me on the right track?  Thx a bunch.

The VATEUD and VATCAN ATOs sure would. And from what I've heard the ZLA Pilot Cert Program is great too.

It's a two-way street. Controllers (typically) spend time learning how to control before actually attempting to do so. Why shouldn't they expect pilots to do at least a little of the same?

I am not sure who gave you the 0200 and 2000z times. That may have been our intro flights. All our P1 training is self-study for the written material. You then have an option to record your practice flights. It is only the checkride that needs to be done with an instructors and we have several that are close to your timezone. Feel free to give us another try!

Ok. Thanks a lot, I certainly will. It was during the sign up process that it asked me which choices I would select for training times when I was in either time zone UTC-10 or plus 5. And that if I did not attend the scheduled course I could be unsubscribed (which I understand if it were not a self study course). Thanks a lot for your response. I will try again tonight.

If you're looking for a self-study program, you could consider this one: www.bvartcc.com/wings. It has an "instructor" component to it in that controllers in the Boston area will provide feedback as you. You will need to complete the flights while ATC coverage is available and to assist with that, we publish expected coverage on our website.

Of course, this program is designed for operations in U.S. airspace and won't necessarily be helpful for flights in Europe or in the rest of the world.

Just keep reading the learning material, and if you're unsure... just MONITOR! Listen for awhile, and hop in when you feel comfortable after hearing the flow of traffic and phraseology for awhile.
