SOLVED: Unhandled exception error - Entering flight plan

I am getting his error when I am trying to enter information into my flight plan or remarks section of vPilot. Clicking continue clears the message box but I am left unable to enter information into the flight plan or remarks box. I can load a flight plan but I am unable to edit it. Clicking on Quit crashes vPilot.

 

It seems the buggy days of flight simulation are returning. Any ideas?

I am trying to narrow down on your cause.... could you do a search of you system for comctl32.dll and find out what version you have?

hmmmmm...... well that is the same one I have. After I finish this flight (about an hour from now), I will disconnect and see if I get similar error.

Here is another interesting symptom, I rebooted in Windows Safe Mode and who'da thunk it, no errors.

Same problem as reported on the Metacraft forums here: Problem to write flight plan route

 

Do you have UAC enabled? Are you running vPilot as an administrator?

I do not know what UAC enabled means. I tried running vPilot as admin and still no joy.

 

I looked at the forum post your provided and sure enough I tried a Ctrl V paste of a route and that worked. Why would a Ctrl V paste work and not just a simple keystroke? For what its worth I have .NET Framework 4.6 installed.

I'm still trying to track this one down ... users of some of my ATC clients are having the same issue. I found some posts on the 'net that suggest this is a 64 vs 32 bit issue.

 

Are you on a 64 bit or 32 bit system?

Just tested and have no issue typing in route or remarks.

 

Did you take the leap to Windows 10 and then start having issues???

Thanks Ross for the response. I'm running Win 7 64 . I also posted to your Metacraft forum on this issue. I was able to safe boot into windows and the problem did not occur. I have a similar issue with AvilaSoft EFB, keystrokes into the route box raises the error and cut and paste do function as a workaround.

Seemingly identical JIT exception was posted here. Might be worth trying the suggested workaround at least as a way of confirming some of the reference links might be relevant.

 

@Andrew: You can try the suggested workaround by doing this:

  1. Ensure vPilot is not running.
  2. Open Notepad, Wordpad, or some other plain text editor you prefer.
  3. Copy/paste the contents of the following code block:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration>
<runtime>
	<legacyNullReferenceExceptionPolicy enabled="1" />
</runtime>
</configuration>


  4. Save this data by copying/pasting the following into the "Save As" dialog (should put it in the correct place with the correct name): %LocalAppData%\vPilot\vPilot.exe.config
  5. Launch vPilot and see if you still have the same issue.

 

If it doesn't work (or appears to cause more issues), simply open %LocalAppData%\vPilot\ and delete the newly-created .config file (making sure you don't accidentally delete a similarly named file, vPilotConfig.xml).

Andrew, are you certain the file was saved as vPilot.exe.config? Sometimes text editors (especially notepad) will add a hidden .txt extension, resulting in the file actually being called vPilot.exe.config.txt.

Sorry Ross, vpilot.exe.config properly set with no .txt extension, still getting the error. Any insight as to why the errors are not present in Windows Safe Mode?

I have no idea ... all I've found so far is that it seems to only happen on 64 bit systems when the executable program (vPilot in this case) is compiled for 32 bit. vPilot is compiled for 32 bit since the SimConnect library is compiled for 32 bit.

 

Strangely, not everyone on 64 bit Windows is getting this issue, and for most of the people that are getting the issue, vPilot used to work fine for them. Something changed on those systems, maybe something in the .NET framework.

 

I'll be looking into finding a workaround.

I found an MSDN forum post that suggests this may be a bug in the .NET framework or in Windows itself. A suggested workaround is to disable the "visual styles" for buttons, text boxes, etc. I just compiled a version of vPilot which does this. This causes the flight plan window and the settings window to use the old uglier boxy buttons and other widgets, but I'm curious if it solves the issue.

 

Those of you having the problem, please download and install this version:

 

http://vpilot.metacraft.com/[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ets/Files/Installers/vPilot-Setup-1.1.5712.25090.exe

 

Ensure you see the older-style buttons on the flight plan form. That way you know the new version installed properly. And let me know if it fixes the problem.

I uninstalled AVG and the error went away. The similar problem I had with AivlaSoft Electronic Flight Bag also went away. Who'da thunk it?

I'm having the same issue and was about to post a request for help as well. Fortunately I saw this and didn't need to. That being said is uninstalling AVG the answer or is there a workaround where you can add an exception to vPilot?

The only workaround is to type your route into a text editor and then do a copy and paste. Crtl V does not raise the error. I uninstalled AVG and the two problems I was having went away. For antivirus I opted to go with Windows Defender on Windows 7.

Slight topic hijacking, but I found this statement quite disconcerting:

For perspective other than my own opinion, the following is from a "Ken Blake", an MVP on the Microsoft community forums:

 

No, it can't come close to doing it all. Windows Defender is not an anti-virus program, it's an anti-spyware program, and not even the best one of those. You definitely should install anti-virus software.

 

(At the very least this applies to Windows 7; I'd hesitate to rely on the "improvements" even on Windows 8 or 10.)
