Define "In good standing"

7.01 Any VATSIM member in good standing may request the requisite training required to provide Air Traffic Control Services in their assigned Division or Sub-Division.

This statement gets thrown around a lot in VATSIM circles.  What does it actually mean?  Under what circumstances may a Division or Facility refuse to train someone who is potentially not in good standing?

Example:  A facility uses their Discord server extensively during training as a communication tool and kind of classroom.  A user requesting training is being a complete &**&%^#* on said discord and it banned for a while.  Is this an example of someone who is not in good standing and therefore cannot access training for the time being?

I think this statement needs exploring to explain why a user might not be in good standing and who makes that decision.

Good standing means active per the CoR and not suspended.

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Forever and always "Just the events guy"

So is that a little pointless then given that a suspended user cannot connect to the network for training purposes anyway?

This is an excellent question to raise in context of the existing rules, for that matter. A facility conducting all matters, training and otherwise, via a specific platform, to which an additional set of rules apply over and above the VATSIM CoC.

In particular, the recent town hall meeting that people were excluded from by virtue of it being held via the Discord and people either being unwilling to comply with the terms of the Discord Policy, or by people being banned from the Discord but not banned from the division.

I'm not entirely sure why additional rules were needed over and above the VATSIM CoC anyway?

Hi William,

A different discussion and not really on topic in the context of the GCAP.

@Matthew Bartels (or anyone of the BOG), could you answer the example scenario mentioned in the opening post? We are having the exact same problem.

I had some examples of this when I was VATSIM UK Division Director and members were banned from Teamspeak for one reason or another.  We would still carry out the training on the network as best we could with no use of feedback on TS.  Although it wasn't ideal, we would find that the unconvinced that was caused to the student meant their behaviour improved and the ban was lifted.

These cases are not easy to deal with but thankfully not that common.

What Simon mentions is probably the best way to go about this. A division could perhaps open up the training room only to a banned member, or if a mentor really wants, do a private call.
