Daniel Hawton Posted September 25, 2010 at 09:51 PM Posted September 25, 2010 at 09:51 PM (edited) Only thing is with the TCWs (at least for R19 and R20), the full datablocks are always white whether they're tracked by you or not.. LDBs are bright green. IE, on a TCW, if you're quick looking either ALL or specific scopes and they're tracking aircraft, you'll see their full datablock and it will be white just like aircraft you are tracking with the only difference being the position identifier over the primary target and beacon slash (or just the target if in multi-sensor mode). Ross Carlson Posted September 26, 2010 at 12:13 AM Posted September 26, 2010 at 12:13 AM Seems like that would make it more difficult to do your scan. I guess they probably just keep their use of quicklook to a minimum and then they can usually just scan all full datablocks? Daniel Hawton Posted September 26, 2010 at 04:45 AM Posted September 26, 2010 at 04:45 AM Seems like that would make it more difficult to do your scan. I guess they probably just keep their use of quicklook to a minimum and then they can usually just scan all full datablocks? Quicklook is usually kept off except on an as-needed basis. After all, quick look only functions for other STARS consoles inside your facility... it doesn't quick look aircraft not being tracked by Center or neighboring STARS systems unless recently handed off by someone in your facility. Why? STARS doesn't communicate inter-facility. The most it "communicates" is it p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]es aircraft information for the handoff "blindly". What I mean is, for example, Pensacola Approach they hand off to scope "1" for Mobile Approach, "H" for Houston Center, "C" for Jax Center (depending on location, the system at Jax Center hands it to Crestview Low or Brewton High as P31's airspace goes to FL230 for part of it, 10000 at the northern edge... or even Nepta to the south over W-155), "2" for Eglin RAPCON, and "3" for NPA's "Seabreeze" (SUA Sector Control). The systems at each facility is responsible for handing that aircraft off to the appropriate console (either by looking at the consolidated airspace, knowing it goes to scope "A" which is currently consolidated with scope "E" or whatever the situation). IE, locally, Seabreeze scopes appear as J H and F... so any aircraft not being tracked by J H or F or recently been handed off to P31 will be a limited datablock with no way to "quick look" it without initiating a track on it yourself. But you have to do it by entering the call sign and other data on your own. But I can't hit MULTI FUNC+Q+A+L+L and see full data blocks for everyone in neighboring TRACONs/RAPCON/Center airspaces. Point outs are fun this way... "On a code of 5541 is C6508, eastbound at 6,500" is the common way. Sometimes you'll get "10 miles south of CHIEF on a code of 1051 is N402FW, oil clean up, at or below 3,500" to help you look in the right area.. but that requires effort from Nepta and they're lazy. lol Ahh heck, we're all lazy. Sorry for the rambling. lol I edited above.. TCWs are bright green LDBs... TDWs are the white ones for full and limited DBs. My bad. I work with both and sometimes get them switched up. Hurray up/down facilities?
Kevin Rush 1212482 Posted February 3, 2012 at 08:00 PM Posted February 3, 2012 at 08:00 PM I would like to put these color profiles on my VRC. How is this done exactly? I've tried copying this to the .ini file but the program does not recognize it in the drop down menus. Sometimes I run into problems in not being able to edit the .ini file as Notepad pops up and says "unauthorized" or "read-only" What am I missing to get these profiles installed and working. The reason it's not "saving" is because of Win7's User Account Control (UAC). It's a good thing (in theory), but it makes things difficult to manage sometimes. Daniel Hawton Posted February 4, 2012 at 03:16 PM Posted February 4, 2012 at 03:16 PM Vista/7 have the same issues. Save the VRC.ini file in your Docomeents directory and then move it to the VRC directory. That's one way around the UAC block on Win 7.
Rahul Parkar Posted February 4, 2012 at 03:41 PM Posted February 4, 2012 at 03:41 PM Or in Win 7 you can turn UAC completely off via the User Accounts page on the Control Panel, the same cannot however be said for Vista. Jonathan Cox 1122818 Posted February 5, 2012 at 03:04 AM Posted February 5, 2012 at 03:04 AM Hey guys, I've checked out all of these color profiles. Great work to all! I'm having a little trouble following what each of these are used for. I'm guessing TCW is the standard color scheme for STARS, and ACD is the standard for ARTS-IIIE? Also, which one is for ARTS-IIE? Just trying to experiment and see which one(s) work best for me. Thanks ahead of time! Daniel Hawton Posted February 5, 2012 at 03:11 AM Posted February 5, 2012 at 03:11 AM ACD came after ARTS-IIIE. ACD = ARTS Color Display and was the precursor to STARS.
Harold Rutila 974112 Posted February 5, 2012 at 07:09 AM Posted February 5, 2012 at 07:09 AM ARTS-IIE is probably the oldest system in use in the FAA (besides TPX-42). It features the "sweep" and a green color for everything. There are still a number of facilities using that system, although the larger TRACONs have switched to ARTS-IIIE (aka CARTS) or STARS. Jonathan Cox 1122818 Posted February 6, 2012 at 06:09 AM Posted February 6, 2012 at 06:09 AM That helps. I'll keep playing around with the color profiles and see what works best for me for the terminal radar. So ACD and STARS TCW R19 are the newest used in the TRACON evironment, am I right on that? Sorry if I sound like a dull knife in the drawer! (I have DSR for enroute now, works great, thanks to Cameron Negrete.)
