Not live but progress so far on the Mexico Vatsys Sector

CZYZ - Toronto Center using ES and Canscope. I have two screens with VFR screen config on the second screen usually zoomed in to CYYZ.

Main screen I flip between three screens using F7. Main screen cover the south, a far North screen and a APP/DEP zoom screen.

Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes to train VATSIM controllers? Here is a little taste of how we do it at New York.

 

General New York traffic (VRC DSR mode)

A general overview of New York traffic for this simulation.

Working JFK traffic (VRC DSR mode)

Running the 4s at Kennedy. LENDY, IGN, CCC, CAMRN, and even one Oceanic arrival can be seen here. Notice the sharp 90 degree turn the Oceanic arrival is going to have to make to join the CAMRN flow. Also observe the LENDY and IGN merge point to the north, lots of 90 degree turns in the JFK sector. NOTE: Even though BLR113's destination says "KLGA" he is going to KJFK.

Working LGA traffic (VRC DSR mode)

NOBBI, HAARP, MIP, and KORRY flows can be seen in this image. Notice the HAARP and NOBBI merge point (to the north) as well as the MIP and KORRY (to the south). LGA southern arrivals are restricted to higher altitudes until the Hudson River because EWR southern arrivals descend below them.

Working IAD and PHL traffic (VRC DSR mode)

DELRO (IAD) and BUNTS (PHL) can be seen in this image. You can see how the flows can easily conflict if the controller is not careful.

Working N90 EWR sector traffic (VRC STARS mode)

Running the 22s at Newark. Notice the shear amount of airplanes around the EWR area. Quick fact... EWR MUGZY sector (TEB and other satellites) is considered the busiest sector in all of the N90. Believe or not, JFK is NOT the busiest.

That color profile seems rather difficult to work an enroute position with. Your aircraft datablocks are roughly the same color as your airspace boundaries and you're using a dark blue color for primaries that nearly blends with the background at first glance. You really want the brightest thing on your scope to be what you're separating, the aircraft primary targets, and data blocks are going to be the next most important thing to be focused on. I'd highly suggest trying the DSR color profiles that so many are using now days. That might make things a tad easier to focus on while you control.

 

I know the ZLA sector file has a large variety of hard-coded colors programed into it, maybe that's why you've opted to use these colors instead. I've taken the liberty to remove a majority of these in a custom file so that using the DSR profile for enroute positions and other profiles for approach control positions is far easier on the eyes than having a rainbow of colors sprawled out across your scope. I can show you how to do this if you'd be interested sometime, it's not too difficult to accomplish. I can tell you for sure though that many studies have gone into the color profiles in use in the real world from determining which colors work best for what portions of the display to how many different colors should be depicted on a scope at any given time... For lack of a better term, there's "a reason for the madness" as it may initially appear.

 

I'd give it a shot though if you haven't already...

As long as you maintain a good situational awareness. Color profile may affect this too as AJ mentioned. With a color profile like a rainbow, it may take quite a couple of millisecond before you locate an aircraft that just called in a thousand mile wide airspace. So having a good color profile with colors easy on the eyes and a color profile that has all your targets visible and can be located easily, you're good. At the end of it anyway, it comes down to your preference and where you're comfortable with.
